International electric vehicle sales grow by 41% during global pandemic

South Africa ranked fifth globally in the ratio of public electric vehicle (EV) chargers to electric vehicles in 2020. Only Korea, Chile, Mexico, Indonesia and the Netherlands have more chargers per EV than SA, according to the IEA Global EV Outlook 2021 report released recently.

February 2021 saw that BEV (battery-electric vehicle) registrations overtook those of PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) registrations locally. This milestone marks the advancements of battery technology in the EV space and growing local consumer confidence in the range offered in newer generation BEV’s with less reliance on ICE (internal combustion engine) hybrid technology. In the same month, SA also had its first registration of a plug-in hybrid Ferrari, the SF90.

The IEA (International Energy Agency) has published the Global EV Outlook annually since 2013 with the latest report profiling 10 million electric cars on the world’s roads at the end of 2020. A highlight of this latest report is that EV sales jumped by 41% in 2020 despite the pandemic-related worldwide downturn in car sales in which global car sales dropped 6% – and this trajectory is expected to continue, with the first sales quarter of 2021 continuing in this trend... more

Remembering the Kimi - Fernando fight

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

Two protagonists who remain in competition today battled for the lead in the 2005 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. The race was held sixteen years ago, this coming weekend.

Kimi Raikkonen won the pole and started ahead of championship leader Fernando Alonso who qualified third. The race saw these two future champions fight for the lead watched by a capacity crowd of more than 100,000 enthusiastic Spanish spectators whose allegiance was never in doubt.

After a thrilling duel, Raikkonen steered his McLaren to victory ahead of the Renault of Alonso who nevertheless extended his lead in the championship chase.

Michael Schumacher’s bid to win a sixth successive title for Ferrari (and an eighth in total), was detailed when he retired after suffering two tyre failures.

Of course, Alonso and the Renault team would go on to win the 2005 World Drivers' and Constructors' Championships, ending five years of dominance by Schumacher. Alonso's success made him the youngest champion in the history of the sport at that time. It was a title he held until Lewis Hamilton won the championship in 2008. Kimi’s title came in 2007.
